September Newsletter

Updated: Sep 15, 2021

Dear Friends,

Every single day, recycling provides one of the easiest ways for each of us to make a positive impact on our environment as well as our economy.  Recycling conserves vast quantities of energy and natural resources, while creating new jobs and supporting Indiana’s commodity manufacturers.

However, Hoosiers must have access to convenient and effective recycling programs and they must also understand the value of participating in those programs.  This summer the IRC has been busy on several fronts to increase both recycling education and access:

  1. Our 2014 Indiana State Fair recycling program and educational booth served nearly one million people and diverted 42 tons of recyclables from disposal!

  2. Our efforts to support effective curbside recycling in Indiana’s largest city, Indianapolis, are making headlines and making a difference.

  3. Our ongoing work at the Statehouse is growing support for policies and funding to increase access to recycling for all Hoosiers.

  4. Our outreach to schools via bin grant programs, Recycle-Bowl, Project ReDirectory and our America Recycles Day video contest is helping to build the next generation of recyclers.

  5. Our ability to connect with Hoosiers via social media grows every day.  Are you connected to the IRC via Facebook or Twitter?

We could not do this work without our many community partners, volunteers, donors and friends.  Thanks to all of you who help us do this important work every day.

As you can see, we have much to celebrate!  Please join us this November 15 (which, not coincidentally, is America Recycles Day) as we commemorate our 25th anniversary in Indianapolis (details here and below).  We hope you will join us for this very special occasion!

Sustainably yours,

Carey

ARDvideoCONTESTweb

As a part of America Recycles Day (ARD), the Indiana Recycling Coalition (IRC) is hosting a recycling video contest.  This year’s theme is “I Want to be Recycled.” This is also Keep America Beautiful’s campaign for the year.  You can find out more information about the “I Want to be Recycled” campaign by visiting www.iwanttoberecycled.org.

The IRC is looking for Indiana high school students (grades 9 through 12) to produce 30-second videos to help educate Hoosiers on the environmental impacts of recycling.  This year’s theme focuses on the value of recycled goods and what they can become if they are recycled rather than thrown in the trash.  Participating schools will have the opportunity to receive cash prizes for their work.

2nd Place – $400

3rd Place – $200

As a statewide organization, one of our goals is to increase access to away-from-home recycling for all Hoosiers. Our partnership with the Indiana State Fair Commission enabled us to provide over 950,000 Hoosiers with recycling access in 2014.

Thanks to the efforts of the IRC, volunteers, fairgoers and the Indiana State Fair Maintenance Crew nearly 42 tons of recyclables were diverted from disposal.

Thanks again all of our wonderful volunteers. This effort would not have been successful with you!
